Little India at Night on iPhone 4s

Lately, one of my favorite  camera apps on iPhone, the 645Pro, has seen a lot of clicks from me in both color and black and white modes. I love it’s H5 black and white mode that has good contrast and nice grain for low light images. All the black and white images here were shot using this app in H5 mode. The color was shot in C42 mode.

Just like few other camera apps, the 645Pro can lock focus and exposure separately, which is very useful when shooting a scene with extreme highlight and shadow. Simply choose the area where you want to take the exposure reading from, lock it by pressing the AE-L button, and then recompose to focus and take the shot. Another feature that I really like is the ability to save the JPEG file in higher quality and the option to save in TIFF too! But it seems to slow down the saving process due to bigger TIFF file size. I will check it out again later. The app comes with a very good user manual too. Just press and hold the Display/Playback button to launch the user manual and you are ready to go.

In case you are wondering, no I am not paid to review this app. I just like it.   :)

This series of images of Little India at night were shot somewhere near Desker Road and Buffalo Road which is only a small fraction of Little India. I will go back there to shoot more.MORE +

One Morning at Whampoa Makan Place

Black and white iPhone photography using the Hipstamatic app is very fun. Depending on the combination of “lens” and “film” you use, it could give you a very nice result. My favorite for the black and white is John S lens with Blackey Supergrain film.

These few shots were taken with my iPhone 4s few days ago at Whampoa Makan Place, a hawker center at Whampoa / Balestier. Some elderly folks were gathering having their coffees, teas, breakfast and chit chatting with each other. I love the scene there and will plan to go back there for more shots.

My wife and I also found a nice noodle there. I forgot the name now, but I know where to find it next. We will go back for the noodle too.  :) MORE +

iPhone Photography – A Red House and A Red Taxi

Night Photography using iPhone at Joo Chiat. iPhone can’t beat the DSLR yet in term of quality and control, especially for night photography, but hey, iPhone photography is about having fun taking pictures with all its limitation. So, keep shooting and enjoy the rest of the weekend.

In case you missed it, I shot this building using my DSLR before. See it here.

Shoot as though you’d be stricken blind tomorrow

Dorothea Lange, an American documentary photographer who lived from 1895 to 1965 once said, “One should really use the camera as though tomorrow you’d be stricken blind”. So, shoot more frequently, I guess that’s the message and having a phone with camera with you all the time will help.

All photos in this blog entry were taken using the iPhone 4s and processed in the iPhone using various apps. Enjoy and keep shooting.MORE +

Chinatown Panorama by iPhone 4s

I think I have fallen in love with Panorama Photography using my iPhone 4s. I shot this series in Chinatown this evening. I brought my mum who has been recovering well to see the vibrant Chinatown  before she leaves this coming Friday.

With lots of people moving, it becomes very tricky for the app to stitch. The same person may appear twice since he/she moves and may appear in the next image, hence confusing the app. But, that’s okay. It’s just a camera phone. I have the excuse.  :) MORE +

Marina Bay Panorama with Puffy Clouds

iPhone Panorama again and of the same scene again, Singapore Marina Bay but with a bonus of puffy clouds this time. These two images are pretty much straight out of the iPhone 4s. I did apply a bit of sharpening since the sharpness of an image would reduce when you resize it.

I have a feeling I will continue to shoot this scene as I will still be there for some time. But I will shoot again when the sky and lighting are different.

The first one above was shot through a tinted glass window that made the sky bluer while the one below was shot from the Marina Bay Promenade on the street level. That tinted glass window gives an effect like the polarizer filter does.MORE +

The View from 48th – Amazing iPhone Photo

You can really take amazing iPhone photos using that little device that was Designed by Apple in California and Assembled in China. Sorry, I know I have been talking about it for some days, but I am still amazed with how all these technologies have changed our life or changed the way we do things.

The above is a panorama, 4 images stitched into 1, using the AutoStitch app. Shot from 48th floor through the glass window. You can see a bit of reflection on the glass but I am fine with that. I can’t ask for the window to be opened, anyway.  :) MORE +

My Best iPhone Photography

20120110-001229.jpg

Here are my favourite and best iPhone photography / best instagram images .. so far.

Camera phone still cannot beat its big brothers, like the DSLR or even some of the compacts. Maybe it never will, but who knows, technology will only get better. But for now, the convenience of having a good little camera in my pocket all the time is wonderful since I cannot always be carrying the DSLR or the M9 or even the smaller Micro Four-Thirds camera, like the Olympus E-P3 or Panasonic GF-1.

Oh, by the way, thank you to those who have been asking about my mum. Thank God that she is now home, recovering well.
